When danger Surrounds Us: God Protects Us

Ever get the feeling like you are in great danger (that evil is present) and something awful could happen any minute? Sometimes, it happens so fast that you don't have time to even pray, "Lord protect me." That panicky feeling takes over and you do whatever it takes to protect you and/or your loved ones and get away from the situation as quickly as possible.
Then later, when the danger is past, you look back with awe and gratitude, knowing that God was really protecting you from harm.

I've experienced a few of those kinds of situations recently and they remind me over and over how God does care for us. I'm not saying that we are always protected from painful situations or the evil decisions of people who don't have Christ in their hearts. Sometimes things do happen, even to the children of God, because of the sin of the world. I'm not sure how God decides when to intervene in these situations and when not to. That's where trusting His wisdom must prevail.

The two stories I am sharing here, though, cannot be anything short of God's protection! Bad results should have and could have happened, especially with the first situation.

  • Over Christmas vacation, we were down on the beaches of South Carolina. The weather wasn't hot, but much warmer than our snow-covered Indiana! Because of this, there weren't a lot of tourists walking along the shore, especially once the sun started to set. We felt pretty safe, since we were staying at a big oceanfront hotel and there were lots of employees and several guests staying there. It was the night before Christmas. We had spent the day on the beach, but our son wanted to go out after dark, just to see what we could find in animal life. *A few years back when visiting, we found white ghost crabs running into their little holes in the sand. So, off we went. It must have been around 10 p.m. Now, I must have felt some precaution was needed because on the way out of the hotel I asked if we should take some pepper spray/mace with us, as we usually had some with us in the car. But it just happened that we left it at home this particular time. We did have a flashlight, though. So, we decided we would just go a little ways down the beach and come back and we would be fine.

Well, several yards down, we saw a few people, we thought either older teens or young men, standing on the beach, smoking some cigarettes. It was so dark out that, if it hadn't been for the glow of the cigarettes, we wouldn't have seem them at all. We walked by them without a word, my son, briefly shining the flashlight their direction. The tide was going out, so there was a small pool of water collecting between the shoreline and near the inner beach, where houses were. After walking about 5 minutes we decided to head back to the hotel, and were jumping across this pool, one at a time. My hubby was the last to cross and just as he did, out of the vast darkness, my son and I saw a figure coming up behind him, moving in quickly. The 'guy' was definitely following us, crossing right where we had crossed. My son whispered, 'Dad, there's a guy following behind you!'  Once my hubby turned and saw him, his protective instinct kicked in, which probably was one thing that saved our lives. This guy, whom my hubby suspected was one of the guys we passed smoking, was obviously up to no good, and had followed us all the way down the beach. Instead of running, which probably would have put us in more danger, hubby walked right up to the guy, which I think threw him off, as he acted all flustered and nervous. He had his hand in his jacket, which looked like he might pull something out of it, but then stuck out his hand to shake hands with my hubby, and started saying that he just wanted to "wish us a Merry Christmas and everything was going to be o.k."  In our best fearless voices we all said "thanks and wished him a Merry Christmas, too." He turned and walked back along the water's edge and we walked towards the houses, first slowly, then VERY quickly.

Later, back at the hotel, hubby said he had a gut feeling the 'stalker' was planning on robbing us. We weren't positive, but were thinking he was either drunk or high. The beach was so dark and the roar of the tide loud enough, that even if we had screamed for help, nobody probably would have heard us. My brave hubby said he was ready to take the guy down, if he pulled anything out of his jacket, but gladly that didn't happen. As I contemplated all that had just occurred, and our stupidity in going out on a dark beach in the first place, I knew that God had protected us from danger. Obviously, we don't know what the guy was planning on doing, but all-in-all, it was just an odd occurrence. Over and over again, I gave thanks to God for His protection, as did my son and hubby. It could have ended very differently!
  • The second situation happened early just this morning. (This situation was very similar to one we experienced several years ago around Christmastime at our old farmhouse.)

Abba, Father

Song by Hillsong - Abba Father
Play and read below....

If you are blessed to have a godly, loving relationship with your earthly father, you will understand the kind of relationship you can have with your heavenly Father. If you weren't so fortunate, you can still learn how wonderful this kind of relationship is!
"Have you not just called to me: 'My Father, my friend from my youth...." (Jeremiah 3:4)

Most people would say that I look and act a lot like my dad. We definitely got along well, as I grew up in a household of 6. The four of us kids (2 boys and 2 girls) all have unique and different personalities. Growing up, my two older brothers were pretty close, as were my younger sister and I. But as we grew and became more independent, we realized we really weren't that much alike at all. It was somewhere during my middle school years, that I started to enjoy doing things with my dad. We discovered that we both enjoyed playing tennis and would go out to the courts, just the two of us, to hit the ball around. My dad also taught me the art of sailing. My parents owned a lake cottage and every summer we all went out and enjoyed swimming, fishing, and boating. My dad liked taking each kid on a ride in his sailboat, but because I took a special interest, he taught me how to steer the boat on the lake by myself. Pretty soon, it became "our" thing to do together.
Me and dad setting on the side of his sailboat.(about 1980)

I loved my dad dearly. When I went off to college, I missed him the most. And when I got married, I was so glad that I had him to walk me down the isle.

It was about 12 years ago when my dad started showing signs of dementia. He would forget important things, like turning off the water and not putting things in the right place. A few years later he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I started to slowly lose the dad I knew, but never stopped loving him. He passed away in 2004. I miss him so much, but cherish the memories of all the good times we had together. I know I will see him again someday, along with my heavenly Father!

I also realize that the close, loving relationship I had with my dad is what I cherish the most in my relationship with Jesus. He is my "Abba" Father, my Comforter, my Helper, and my biggest Supporter. I know I can come to Him in times of sorrow, loss, and anger, as well as in times of joy, peace, and happiness. I walk with Him, talk with Him, and listen to Him. He sits with me, watches over me as I sleep, walks beside me, and when I need it the most, He carries me. Just like my earthly father, I also have grown up with and learned the love of my Heavenly Father.  I also carry the name, "child of God" and "joint-heir of Christ". Oh, how wonderful!! I am His and He is mine!!

If you have never come to have such a relationship with Jesus, ask Him today to show you how to come to know Him as your "Abba Father." He is always here, waiting with open arms!!

"For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of son-ship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'" (Romans 8:15)

"Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, 'Abba, Father.'" (Galatians 4:6)
"You are my hiding place; You protect me from trouble. You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance. Selah." Psalm 32:7

Let it Snow....Let it Snow....Let it Snow

Well, this time of year(between January and April) is my least favorite time. It's cold here, where I live and roads can get pretty icy and hazardous at times. The sun doesn't shine too much and skies are gray. There are a few good things about this time of year:
  1. The days are now getting longer and spring will be coming.
  2. Because of the cold weather and snow, I don't feel guilty reading and writing and blog-hopping.
  3. Even though I don't like the cold, the beauty of the snow falling and layered on the ground and trees is very beautiful!
Here are some winter pictures from the internet that I found reminded me that wintertime and the snow have a beauty all it's own!
Winter
“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow
or seen the storehouses of the hail,
which I reserve for times of trouble,
for days of war and battle?
Job 38:22
Winter, Winter
Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments,
embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.
John Boswell

Winter tones, Winter tones
Isaiah 1:18
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

"One touch of nature makes the whole world kin."
William Shakespeare
DEER AND RABBIT SNOW
There is nothing in the world more beautiful than the forest clothed to its very
hollows in snow.  It is the still ecstasy of nature, wherein every spray, every
blade of grass, every spire of reed, every intricacy of twig, is clad with radiance.
William Sharp
Snowy Mountains
Proverbs 25:13
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.

Prayer to the Snowy Owl
Descend, silent spirit;
you whose golden eyes
pierce the grey
shroud of the world—
Marvelous ghost!
Drifter of the arctic night,
destroyer of those
who gnaw in the dark—
preserver of whiteness.
Winter Cardinal

"Sweet bird!  thy bow'r is ever green,
Thy sky is ever clear;
thou hast no sorrow in thy song,
No winter in thy year."
-  John Logan,  1748 - 1788

When the snow is still blowing against the window-pane in
January and February and the wild winds are howling without,
what pleasure it is to plan for summer that is to be.
